The Biofilm Challenge in Poultry & livestock:

The water quality conditions on farms can vary significantly. Bacterial contamination levels may be low (as low as 1 CFU/mL), moderate (100–500 CFU/mL), or high (up to 60,000 CFU/mL). Even when incoming water has a low microbial count, most water systems remain vulnerable to biofilm formation.

Biofilm develops from mineral deposits on the interior surfaces of water pipes and drinking lines, creating an ideal environment for bacteria such as E. coli and other microorganisms to thrive. Since up to 95% of microbes reside within biofilm, its removal is essential for achieving sustained microbiological control of drinking water.

Slime formation occurs rapidly in water systems. Planktonic cells circulating in the water clump together and adhere to the inner surfaces of pipes, forming sessile colonies. These colonies expand quickly, attracting more free-floating cells. The accumulating slime can restrict water flow and become a persistent source of contamination, compromising water quality and animals’ health.

In existing water distribution systems, pipes are often chronically contaminated with slime. It is important to note that conventional disinfectants such as chlorine or hydrogen peroxide neither separate, break down, nor permanently eliminate biofilm.
